Serenity
Gorramit! I had to watch Serenity again. "I am a leaf on the wind..."
Yeah, man, that's one of the best lines ever. From any genre. Especially the way Whedon uses it to set up what happens next... An author friend of mine and I were discussing that awhile back. She mentioned that one of the canonical rules for writing is that you build up a trust with your audience by having core characters that are part of the story. And in Serenity, he breaks that rule twice. And hard. And yet it doesn't really break the trust, but actually makes it stronger. And that's the genius of Whedon. And pretty much all the great artists, really. The rules matter, but only in a completely irrelevant way.
