The Reservation's Finest Taxi Service
I had to get out to an auto parts store. My Indian Guide knew of a place out around ten miles, but with a car not running we still had to get there. I mentioned calling a taxi, but he had already wandered into the lot of the truck stop the carcass was parked at. I followed him.
He went straight up to a jewelry merchant selling trinkets out the back of an Expedition, and in Navajo negotiated a price of $11.20 for the trip up to the auto parts store, far better than a normal taxi would have been. I managed to catch a bit of the language, and realized that the driver was headed out that way anyway, and wouldn't mind some gas money and some company. I bought some of her jewelry, too, for the novelty. For the next week this taxi service would be the backbone of my Gallup operation.
