A Pet Theory on Languages

14:18 <seanpeterson> I guess a lot of that is actually ego rather than training. I mean for example me and Dutch. I hate speaking it cause I sound like a 7 year old.
14:19 <tunixman> Heh, man, yeah, I think that's one of the reasons I'd upset a lot of my Japanese friends.
14:19 <tunixman> They hear me in English and I sound like a 30-something engineer.
14:19 <seanpeterson> I have to use basic grammar instead of the way I am used to talking in English and so my pride is actually holding me back
14:19 <tunixman> They hear me in Japanese and I sound like a babbling toddler.
14:19 <tunixman> They can't reconcile the two.
14:20 <tunixman> Although I have a pet theory that the reason adults learn language differently than children is because of exactly that.
14:20 <tunixman> They're too proud to sound like a toddler for a few months.
14:20 <seanpeterson> Yeah, it doesn't help that I know how much people judge others by language competence
14:20 <tunixman> It's not that they can't activate the language learning of their brain.
14:20 <tunixman> It's that they won't.
14:20 <seanpeterson> Hmmm....
14:20 <tunixman> But man, there's something perversely fun about babbling like a schoolgirl in Japan.
14:21 <seanpeterson> You might be on to something
14:22 <tunixman> Hang on, I need to capture this.
14:22 <seanpeterson> Definitely
14:22 <tunixman> Can I use your seanpeterson name or should I obfuscate it?
14:23 <seanpeterson> Go ahead and use my name
